My brother is an only child
The movie follows the lives of two brothers growing up in small town in Italy (Latina, south of Rome) during the ’60s and ’70s. Their different political ideologies shapes their love-hate relationship: the older one is passionate in his leftist convictions and the younger brother grows up with fascist party leanings.
This political comedy shows the two brothers over the course of 15 years, going through the tumultuous Italian socio-political history. During that time span the siblings’ loyalties will change, they will endure fights and find themselves separated by the ravages of time and reunited once they get older, showing that brotherhood is stronger than ideologies.
Why have we chosen this movie? For our Italian week we have thought about bringing you back in the Italian ’60s and ’70s, giving you the chance to test your Italian skills at the same time (English subtitles will be on as well though!). The movie shows Italian recent history in an interesting and fun way explained through the eyes of two brothers who belong to opposing ideological ideas, but yet are very close. You’ll see Rome and the surrounding areas the way they were back in those years, with students protests and strong opposing political ideas and you’ll hear Italian music popular back then.
